Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

What is the Magic Endowment Fund (MEF)?

The MEF is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986 by the Society of American Magicians. Its mission is to advance the art of magic by providing grants that support magicians, fund educational opportunities, preserve magic’s history, and assist performers in need.

How is the MEF funded?

The MEF relies on donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations, as well as investment earnings from its endowment. Contributions ensure the fund can continue supporting the magic community for years to come.

Can I donate to the MEF?

Yes! Donations of any size help sustain our mission. You can contribute online, by check, or through planned giving. Visit our Donate page for more information.

Grant Applications

What types of grants does the MEF offer?

The MEF offers two main grant programs:

• The General Grant Program – A competitive program that supports projects advancing the art of magic, including scholarships, research, community programs, and other activities that encourage a deeper engagement with magic.

• The Houdini Fund– Provides financial aid to magicians and allied performers facing medical expenses due to illness or injury.

How much do you typically award for a grant?

Grants are generally anywhere from $100 to $6,000 in size. Sometimes larger or multi-year grants might be made available under limited circumstances.

Who is eligible to apply for a grant?

Grants are open to individuals, organizations, and projects that align with the MEF’s mission. Applicants do not need to be members of the Society of American Magicians to apply.

How do I apply for a grant?

Grant applications must be submitted through our online application forms for General Grants or for the Houdini Fund. Each application should include a detailed project description, budget, and explanation of how the funds will be used. More details can be found on our Grants page. Questions about completing the application can be made through the Contact page.

When are grant applications reviewed?

• Applications for the Houdini Fund for magicians and allied performers in need can be made at any time and will be reviewed confidentially by a small subset of Trustees.

• Applications for general grants must be received by Dec 31 and July 31 each year. Trustees meet twice a year to review general grant applications, and applicants will be notified of their decision within two weeks of the review meeting. Applicants seeking emergency general grants should submit an application and contact the MEF about their timeline.

Can I apply for funding for a project that has already started or is completed?

No. MEF grants cannot be used to cover expenses that have already been incurred. Funding is intended for future projects and initiatives

Can I request funding for personal living expenses?

No. Grants are not awarded for personal expenses such as rent, utilities, or everyday living costs. However, medical-related expenses for magicians and allied performers in need may be covered through the Houdini Fund.

I volunteer as a magician for a local hospital or charity. Can I apply for a grant to get paid for this work?

No, but the MEF appreciates your volunteering to do this work. If you expect to incur expenses related to materials or workshops associated with your volunteer work, this may be eligible for a grant.

Can I apply for a grant more than once?

Yes. However, your new grant application should be for different expenses, you should have demonstrated that earlier funds were put to good use, and you should be in good standing regarding reporting for your earlier grant. If your previous grant application was not funded or was partially funded by the MEF, you may reapply with additional justification for the specific grant request. Please contact the MEF in advance of your reapplication if you have questions.
